Celebrating team fit, spirit and collaboration
First things first, I have something I want to get off my chest: I love my team!
Why you ask? Let me count the ways.
When I joined Techspace in April 2021, I immediately admired the company’s supportive and open environment. I also appreciated the trust the company put in me from the start. I was given autonomy and allowed to build a team that complemented my style.
So did I hire a bunch of mini-mes? Absolutely not! That would be boring and counterproductive. Instead I sought a diverse mix of people with varying skills that — when brought together — have created something of unique value, leading to amazing outcomes.
While each of the team have different strengths, there were some core similarities that I looked for when hiring my team members. These characteristics have helped us succeed both independently and as a group.
1. We are all are inspired by continuous improvement
In the workplace, it is easy to become complacent and just ‘get the job done’ each day. I’m so pleased that my team members are always examining ways we can improve, both as individual employees and as a company.
2. We are flexible
If the past two years have taught us anything, it is that nothing is certain. My team is super agile. When curveballs like Covid lockdowns are thrown at us, we adapt to manage the new ground rules.
3. We collaborate and trust each other
In the past, I struggled to delegate and spent too much time overseeing the work of others. Since starting at Techspace, I’ve made a big effort to let go and trust my team to get the job done. In return, creativity and initiative have flourished.
My team members also trust each other, and there is free and open collaboration. When team members help each other, there’s no need or expectation for them to complete a task individually. Group strategic thinking and collaboration have helped reduce stress and burnout.
4. We value each other’s unique strengths
I think it’s important to recognise that individuals within a team shouldn’t be expected to share the same strengths. Everyone in my team has their own unique listening, learning and comprehension styles, and we excel at different things. We appreciate each other’s skills and reach out to one another for help regularly.
5. We celebrate each other’s successes
Techspace has an amazing culture that celebrates success – both the big wins and the smaller ones, which are equally important. I love looking out for the lower-profile achievements and celebrating them; it’s even better when team members spot their colleagues doing something great and tell me about it.
By regularly recognising, rewarding, and celebrating both team and individual performances, we strive to build morale, boost motivation within the team, and are encouraged to continue our hard work.
As my first year anniversary at Techspace comes closer, it’s been fun to reflect on how much my team has grown. I’ve loved being a part of such a collaborative and open group of people. I feel truly supported and am empowered to build on our great foundation. I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish during year number two!
Thanks to my amazing team for a job well done and for making Techspace an awesome place to work!
